There are more than 600 solutional cave in Okinawa, surrounded by coral reef seas and subtropical islands.
The largest limestone cave is Gyokusendo Cave. Founded over 300,000 years, Gyokusendo Cave is one of the largest in Japan, with a total length of 5,000 meters and more than one million Speleothem. (Open to the public is 890m)

Highlights
Caves that are out of reach of the sun are inhabited by creatures adapted to dark environment. In Gyokusendo Cave, there are many rare species of subtropical islands, such as Okinawa least horseshoe bat, Harvestman and Kuroiwa's ground gecko, the largest freshwater shrimp in Japan, and Giant mottled eel growing more than 1.5m.
There are a variety of Speleothem, including the Stalactites hanging from the ceiling, Stalagmites, which extends from the ground like bamboo shoots, Microgours, which grows through groundwater flows, and Cave pearls, which grows with sand grains.
"Cave rafts" is a rare Speleothem that can be seen only during the season.
"Okinawa Cave Week 2021" was held for eight days from November 21 to 28, 2021 with the aim of allowing citizens to get acquainted with the nature and culture of Okinawan caves and Karst area. There were many deep events by cave specialists at the Okinawa World and the Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum.
